This is the first-generation model, with the distinctive rectangular front standard and pantograph-style extending mechanism. It uses 127 roll film, producing images approximately 2½ × 1⅝ inches, and has a fixed-focus lens with Kodak's simple numbered aperture settings. The original shutter provides 1\/25 and 1\/50 sec, plus T and B settings. Known as the “Soldier’s Kodak”, the VPK became one of the most popular small cameras of its era and was carried on notable expeditions, including the 1914 Shackleton expedition and the 1924 Everest expedition.
